Participant Observer

Dear Readers,

The Worldview Project, the all-volunteer nonprofit that publishes the San Diego Participant Observer and this newsletter, operates without government funding. However, many nonprofit organizations that provide essential services and improve lives rely on federal grants to sustain their work. Unfortunately, these critical funds are facing severe cuts in the coming months and years, putting vital programs at risk.

Now, more than ever, we urge you to support San Diego’s nonprofits. Your contributions can help them continue their invaluable work despite these financial challenges. With funding reductions affecting a wide range of organizations, we encourage you to find one—or more—that resonates with you and donate. Your generosity can make all the difference in helping them weather this storm. We are all in this together, folks!

Many of the events featured on our calendar are organized by local nonprofits that work tirelessly to enrich our community and support those in need. If you're unable to donate directly, consider attending their events. Your participation helps sustain their efforts and amplifies their impact.

In the days and weeks ahead, San Diego offers a wealth of opportunities to explore and engage with our vibrant community. Take advantage of all our city has to offer—discover, connect, celebrate, and engage!

Recipe of the Month

Salantourmasi
Greek Salantourmasi

Our recipe of the month is for Greek Stuffed Onions (Salantourmasi), a delicious concoction made of easy-to-procure ingredients. Preparation is straightforward, but these delights require slow cooking in your oven. But this recipe is worthy of the time spent; Salantourmasi are flavor bombs! A bonus recipe for Tzatziki is included!

CD of the Month

Our International Music of the Month suggestion is Alefa Madagascar, the first compilation to document the unique culture of salegy, soukous and soul on the island of Madagasgar during the ‘70s and ‘80s.

Book of the Month

Our International Book of the Month is If an Egyptian Cannot Speak English by Noor Naga.

In the aftermath of the Arab Spring, an Egyptian American woman and a man from the village of Shobrakheit meet at a café in Cairo. He was a photographer of the revolution, but now finds himself unemployed and addicted to cocaine, living in a rooftop shack. She is a nostalgic daughter of immigrants “returning” to a country she’s never been to before, teaching English and living in a light-filled flat with balconies on all sides. They fall in love and he moves in.
